How to Play Craps at an Oregon Casino

There is no real limit to how many players can participate in a game of Craps. Basically, if you can fit yourself in around the table, you can play. There is one shooter (the person throwing the dice) and countless bettors. A boxman is on hand to collect losing bets and pay winners.

In order to play Craps, you will need to place chips on certain betting areas of the table. As the dice are thrown, your bet will either be won, lost, or remain on the table, depending on the type of bet you placed, and of course… the roll of the dice.

Craps Bets

There are two basic types of bets in Craps – those that are won or lost in a single roll, and those that remain on the table for multiple rolls, until won or lost. We’ll describe each type of Craps bet below.

Craps Bets: Line Bets

These are extremely popular Craps bets, having a house edge of only 1.40% to 1.41%.There are four types of Line Bets, two of which must be placed before the shooter’s first roll, and the other two after. Line Bets are long-lasting bets that remain on the table until won or lost.

Pass Line: Must be placed on come out roll only. If 7 or 11 is rolled, you win 1:1; if 2, 3 or 12 is rolled, you lose. Any other number rolled becomes the “Point”. From here on out, you are betting that the Point will come again before a 7 is rolled.

Don’t Pass: Opposite of the Pass Line, if a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled on the come out roll, you win 1:1; if a 7 or 11 is rolled, you lose. Any other number becomes the “Point”, and your bet becomes one that the shooter will roll 7 before the Point comes again.

Come: Placed immediately after the Point is established, this is a bet that the Point will come again before a 7.

Don’t Come: Placed immediately after the Point is established, this is a bet that a 7 will come before the Point is rolled again.

Place Bet: A bet on one of these numbers – 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 – that the chosen number will come before a 7.

Place Bet to Lose: A bet on one of these numbers – 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 or 10 – that the chosen number will NOT come before a 7.

Big 6 / Big 8 Bet: Exactly the same as a Place Bet on 6 or 8, expect the payoff is lower. These pay 1:1, where Place Bets pay 23:21 (slightly higher). TIP: Don’t make this bet!

Hardway Bet: this is a bet that a specific number will be rolled the “hard way”. For example, a 4 will be rolled as 2+2 (not 1+3), or a 6 as 3+3 (not 4+2 or 5+1). Hardway Bets can be placed on all doubles resulting in 4, 6, 8 or 10.

Craps Bets: Single Roll Bets
These are bets placed after the point is established, and are won or lost in a single roll of the dice.

Field Bet: This is a bet that the next roll will be 2, 3, 4, 9 10, 11 or 12.

Proposition Bet: There are several proposition bets that can be placed, but let us start by saying we discourage them. The payoffs seem great, but the house edge is incredibly high. Proposition bets can be made on:

Any Craps (2, 3 or 12)
Any Seven
Horn Bet (2, 3, 11 or 12)
World Bet (2, 3, 7, 11 or 12)
Yo Bet (11)
2 or 12
3 or 11
1+6 (Hardway 7)
2+5 (Hardway 7)

Craps Betting Tips and Strategy

1.Avoid Proposition Bets, the house edge is generally too high.
2.Never place a bet on Big 6 or Big 8. Instead, bet on Place Bet 6 or 8, the payoff is higher.
3.Never bet on Any Seven. The house edge is 16.67%. If yo must bet on 7′s, place three equal bets on 1+6, 2+5 and 3+4 (all Hardway 7s). the house edge is decreased to 11.11%.
