October, the regulation of online gambling was a huge topic in online casino forums, and among online casino players.
No one believed anything would change of course, no one for one minute believed that the US government would censor our internet experience, or place regulations on actives we choose to participate in while enjoying the comfort and privacy of our own homes, especially activities that are otherwise perfectly legal.
There’s no law against driving to a land based casino and placing a bet, spinning the reels of a slot machine, or engaging in a game of poker. There’s no law against spending your entire day and entire social security check in a bingo hall…
However, October of 2006, the United States Government passed the Safe Ports Act… which to most Oregonians sounded a little bit excessive, however, as we all thought back to September 11th, and the horror’s that happened on that day, we were in agreement, it was time for some change.
This bill was President Bush’s baby. His piece of legislation, designed to allow Americans, living here in the land of the free the peace of mind to live happy and free lives. There was no chance the bill wouldn’t pass.
That in mind, in the late hours of the night, a little extra bit of language was added to the bill… something we in America now know quite intimately as the UIGEA or the Unlawful Internet Gambling Act, which makes it against the law for banks to process financial transactions to do with online gambling. What fans of Oregon Casinos didn’t quite understand is just how this keeps our ports secure.
Now many still have some questions: Is online gambling illegal? Can I still legally play at online casinos?
